Do you think comics are a children's or adult genre/media?

Comics are being published and sold more times and world wide since they were first introduced into the media and literary world. Comics can sometimes be made mistaken for being suitable for children only, however comics are now being made and written up specifically for both children and adults. Comic strips are suggested to encourage children to read but as we see now there seem to be a lot more pictures than words in majority of comics. Some comics can contain violence, language and suggest themes. Authors and illustrators now know when to draw the line in their choice of audience in selecting whether or not their type of comic is for children or adults.

Farr (1991) suggests that comics similar to Tintin have a wide target audience spanning from people aged from seven to seventy seven. Each person will interpret the comic differently and that there are always new things and ways of interpreting the comic, no matter how many times the comic is re-read. In reference to Tintin, as children will read about TinTin, they will only see it for entertainment and enjoyment only and would not know that Tintin is based on historical events. Whereas the adults will interpret Tintin as racial, animal cruelty and violence.

I personally feel that comics can be written and published for both children and adults. Comics do not only have to violent but also can portray important messages for children to understand. Adults are also able to learn just as they read about Tintin and the importance of history events and gain a better knowledge and understanding as authors and publishers always aim to show more than they tell.

  1. Thanks Luando. A good post. You need to keep an eye on the clarity of your language (always reread before you post). Your opinion is clear and well developed although I would have liked a little more from the secondary text and definitely an example from the primary text. Good.
